Need Help Identifying Gold Bar

Well, title says it all. My mother, aunt and uncle were cleaning out my recently deceased grandmothers apartment yesterday and came across a bar of gold. They didnt have a good enough camera to take a picture of to send, so i have to wait till shes back from NY to actualy see it and get pics up here. But she read to me what was on it.

Obverse
Horneus(?) Dental Gold Co.

Fine HDG gold
1 oz. troy 9999

Reverse
Unecht(?)

Heraeus(sp)
Rnd(bottom corner)

Has anyone heard of or seen these? I know with dental gold sometimes i can be hard to test purity, but with a 9999 stamp on it I'd say thats pretty good. Apparently my grandparents were close friends with a dentist back in the 40's or 50's and this is likley to origin of it. Likleyhood of a counterfit is small. Mother said she just found it sitting on a shelf, so likley my grandmother had no idea of its current value.

Any ideas?

The "unect" concerns me a bit.

HERAEUS is a refining company from Germany http://weightoncoin.com/coins/images...%20Bar_001.jpg

edit : and yes, Unecht means "false"

ty. I figured it was at the very least a german- american company from the names, though I didnt turn up much on search. And seeing as, like you've even said, Unecht is german for fake I had doubts.

But why would company make a bar for dental gold, stamp it 9999 with the 1 troy ounce and all that if its a fake. Is there a big market for known fake gold bars :confused_ma:

Probably a "display" sample for salesmen.

Actually, fake gold bars that look genuine do very well on places like ebay. Unfortunately, you'd have to deal with the guilt that your buyers-buyer will probably pay spot price for a fake.

I dont think i could live with the guilt of dooping some one out of 900 knowingly like that. If I didnt know it was fake and neither did the person buying then I wouldnt feel bad, but to know its a fake...nah, couldnt do it. Then again, that would certainly help with my car payments :tongue_ma:

yes, my thread is official now, i have the TA stamp of approval!

On another note, my mother did find an old penny from 1890 something(not worth much) an indian head nickle from 1930 something(date is worn off, also not worth much) and an 1896 AU(from her description anyways) Morgan.

Im sure theres more, she just calls me as she finds them to ask what they are worth. I told her to give the nickle and penny to my cousinds kids as it was their great grandmother and they were close. They're 10 and 13 respectivly. So it should make a nice gift if they put it in a decent case to hang in their rooms. Who knows, when they are 84, the coins might be worth a whole hell of alot being some 150+ years old.
